Plumbing leaks: what to do before help arrives

Safe first steps for a leaking tap, burst pipe, blocked drain or water-pressure problem.

If water is flowing heavily, turn off the nearest stop valve or main water supply if you can do so safely. Keep electrical devices and extension cords away from standing water.

Take photos of the affected area and note whether the issue is a leak, a blocked drain, low pressure or no water supply. When contacting a plumber, share the address, property type, photos and whether water has been shut off.

Avoid forcing pipes, using unknown chemicals or opening concealed fittings. Ask the provider about the inspection charge, estimated work and whether replacement parts are included before the repair begins.

Photograph the leak and meter reading from a safe, dry place before anything is moved. Tell the provider whether water is near electrical equipment, a ceiling is sagging or a shared pipe may be involved. After repair, test the affected fixtures, check for continuing dampness and keep the replaced-part and warranty details with the invoice.
