Home repair request checklist
A practical checklist for getting a clear home-repair quote, work record and handover.
Before contacting a provider, write down the exact problem, when it started, the affected room, property type and access restrictions. Take clear photos or video from a safe distance. For an electrical, gas, structural or major water issue, stop using the affected area and seek qualified help.
Ask for a written quotation or work order that identifies the provider or business, a direct contact person, the property address, scope of work, labour charge, materials, call-out or transport fee, estimated start and finish date, and whether tax or disposal is included. If a deposit is requested, record the amount, purpose, payment recipient and balance due. Do not agree to a blank or open-ended quote.
For larger work, list the exact materials, brand or grade where relevant, quantity, colour or finish, and who is responsible for permits, debris removal and any damage. Changes should be approved in writing with the revised price and timeline before extra work starts.
At completion, inspect the repair with the provider. Test the affected item, photograph the finished work, collect the invoice or receipt and note any warranty, return visit or unresolved issue. Keep the quotation, messages and payment records together in case you need a follow-up.
Describe the symptom, not a guessed diagnosis: where it is, when it happens and what makes it worse. Give the provider access limits, parking, floor level and whether a tenant, owner or management approval is needed. Before work starts, confirm the repair boundary, materials, clean-up and warranty in writing, then retain before-and-after photos and the receipt.
