Visiting Semporna islands responsibly: protected nature and community-respect checks

Use Sabah Parks rules and current on-site direction to plan a respectful Semporna island visit without making assumptions about access or local activities.

1

10-second fit

Use this guide before visiting a Semporna island or a protected marine area. It helps you prepare to follow current rules; it does not grant access, replace a permit or describe every community's local practice.

2

1. Treat the park rules as the minimum, not a suggestion

Sabah Parks enforcement guidance explains that protected areas and resources are subject to restrictions. Tun Sakaran Marine Park is a protected destination, so use the latest park and operator instructions for your actual route, activity and island. Do not assume that seeing an island in an itinerary means you may enter every area, land anywhere or carry out every activity.

3

2. Keep wildlife and natural material where they are

  • Do not take coral, shells, plants, wildlife or other natural material from a protected area.
  • Stay within areas and activity boundaries identified by responsible staff or the licensed operator.
  • Keep food, waste and equipment secured; take your own rubbish away unless the operator gives a current disposal instruction.
  • Do not touch, feed or chase wildlife for a photograph. A photo opportunity is not permission to disturb an animal or habitat.
4

3. Plan photographs and visits respectfully

Semporna's islands include lived-in communities as well as visitor destinations. Ask before photographing people, homes, boats, children or a community activity. Do not enter private space, board a vessel or fly equipment such as a drone unless the responsible owner and any relevant authority have clearly permitted it. If staff direct you away from an area, follow that direction without debating it on site.

5

4. When rules, access or conditions change

Keep your permit, booking and operator contact accessible. If the operator, park staff or a local authority changes the route or stops an activity, accept the current instruction rather than seeking an unofficial workaround. Sabah Tourism identifies Semporna's public and Seafest jetties as travel-booking points, but each boat, island and transfer still requires its own current confirmation.

6

Before you go

  • Recheck the park page, permit condition and operator briefing.
  • Pack reusable water, sun protection and only activity-appropriate equipment.
  • Ask about current access instead of relying on a previous visitor's route.
  • Keep the visit quiet, lawful and considerate of both habitat and residents.

This is a responsible-visit planning guide, not legal advice or a substitute for a current permit, park briefing or local authority instruction.
