Moving house: a local transport checklist
A detailed moving checklist for a clear transport quote, item inventory and delivery handover.
Create an item list before requesting a quote. Mark large, fragile, high-value and heavy items, and identify anything that needs dismantling or special handling. Measure large furniture and access points at both addresses, including stairs, lifts, gates, corridors and parking height limits.
A written quote should state the mover or business name, direct contact, collection and delivery addresses, date and arrival window, vehicle type, number of helpers, item list, labour charge, transport charge, packing materials, dismantling or reassembly, waiting time, distance or floor charges, and any insurance or liability terms. Confirm the deposit, recipient account and balance payment in writing.
Pack passports, identity documents, cash, jewellery, medication, keys and daily essentials yourself; do not place them in the moving load. Label every box by destination room and take photos of valuable items before collection.
At collection and delivery, count boxes and major items against the list. Photograph visible damage immediately, note it on the delivery record and notify the mover in writing. Do not sign a completion acknowledgement until the items listed for that stage have been checked.
Make an inventory for high-value, fragile and oversized items, including their condition before loading. Confirm stairs, lifts, parking, building booking rules and the party responsible for packing, dismantling, reassembly and disposal. At delivery, count against the inventory before the crew leaves and note any visible issue in writing immediately.
